How to Use
Melting
Melt to around 70–75°C, stirring as it melts. Short spells up to 90°C are fine if the wax is cooled quickly, but don't hold it hot for long or remelt old candles above 85°C, as this can discolour it.
Colour
Powder dyes: heat to about 75°C and stir until fully dissolved. Powder dye pre-dissolved in fragrance, liquid dyes and colour blocks: about 70°C. A touch of black dye deepens a shade.
Fragrance
Use 5–10%, added and mixed just before pouring. Choose fragrances made for natural waxes, as paraffin-type fragrances can cause sweating, a poor surface or a weak flame.
Pouring and moulds
Pour at around 55–65°C for good mould release, depending on the size and shape. If you see problems, adjust in steps of 5–10°C. Moulds should be clean and at least room temperature; warming them to 45–50°C helps release.
Cooling and top-ups
Leave to cool undisturbed at around 25°C. It's designed for a single pour, but large pillars may need a top-up with slightly warmer wax before the candle has fully cooled.
Wicking and testing
Natural waxes usually need a larger wick than paraffin. Trim wicks to ¼ inch, leave candles 48 hours before test burning, and check melt pool width and mushrooming. Test every combination of size, wick, fragrance and dye.
Equipment
Stainless steel is best and mild steel is fine. Avoid copper and zinc, which speed up discolouration. Use a digital thermometer.
