Golden Wax 464, Golden Wax 494 or Nature Wax C3: which soy wax should you use?

Golden Wax 464, Golden Wax 494 and Nature Wax C3 are three of the most popular soy waxes in the UK. All three are made from hydrogenated soybean oil, but each is designed for a different job, and choosing the right one is the biggest single step towards a smooth finish and a good scent throw.

1. Golden Wax 464: the all-round container wax

Golden Wax 464 soy wax in a 22.7 kg box

Golden Wax 464 is a soy container wax with a low melting point. It gives a smooth, creamy top, helps to minimise frosting and is known for holding and releasing fragrance well when melt and pour temperatures are controlled.

Working temperatures

  • Melting point: 52–58°C
  • Fragrance load: up to 10%
  • Add fragrance at: 70–75°C
  • Pour at: 65–75°C

2. Golden Wax 494: for wax melts and tarts

Golden Wax 494 soy wax in a 22.7 kg box

Golden Wax 494 is formulated for moulded products rather than wicked candles. It sets firm, holds its shape when released from moulds and gives a glossy finish, with good colour and fragrance distribution.

3. Nature Wax C3: a popular container wax

Nature Wax C3 soy wax in a 22.7 kg box

Nature Wax C3 (also sold as Soya Eco Wax) is a soy container wax with a melting range of around 45–50°C. It is a well-established choice for container candles and accepts a wide range of fragrances.

Tips for better results

  • Always test burn a new wax, wick and fragrance combination before making a full batch.
  • Weigh your fragrance as a percentage of wax weight and stay within the maximum load.
  • Check your fragrance supplier’s IFRA certificate for the maximum level allowed in candles.
  • Let candles cure before test burning: soy wax scent throw usually improves after a few days.
